Lithium-ion batteries operate based on the movement of lithium ions between the anode and cathode during charge and discharge cycles. During discharge, lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte. When the battery is being charged, an external voltage is applied, causing the movement of lithium ions in the opposite direction.

Are Lithium-Ion Batteries Safe?
Lithium-ion battery fires can be dangerous and costly, as demonstrated by the APS fire in Arizona. While these batteries offer many benefits, it is important to take appropriate precautions to minimize the risk of a fire. By following best practices for storage, handling, and maintenance, and by installing fire suppression systems where appropriate, the risk of a lithium-ion battery fire can be greatly reduced.
